TED Talk Lunch Series
11/14/24 @ 12:00pm – 11/14/24 @ 1:00pm Community Room Winfield Public Library Are we born to be optimistic rather than realistic? That’s the question of this month’s selected TED Talk, “The optimism bias,” by cognitive neuroscientist Tali Sharot. Sharot, author of The Optimism Bias: A Tour of the Irrationally Positive Brain, explores why our brains seem to be hardwired to overestimate the positve and how that can be both dangerous and beneficial. Pack a lunch, invite a friend, and join the discussion. What they are: TED Talks are short, carefully prepared, idea-focused talks that foster learning, inspiration, and wonder. Why we like ’em: no matter the topic covered, these talks provoke conversation and inspire listeners to continue thinking and learning far after the presenter has finished How to join: bring your lunch to the library and join in as we watch a highly rated TED Talk and continue the conversation amongst ourselves What else should I know? Coffee and dessert are provided

Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Pie Plate
11/15/24 @ 2:00pm – 11/15/24 @ 3:00pm Community Room Winfield Public Library Few families escape making decisions about passing on personal possessions. Paring down and deciding if and how to transfer personal possessions is inevitable when a family member downsizes, declutters, moves or dies. While it may seem simple, decisions about personal property can be challenging and lead to serious family conflicts. Join Becky Reid from K-State Research and Extension Cowley County to explore resources and practical strategies from “Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Pie Plate” developed by University of Minnesota Extension.

Youth Book Club (grades 3-7)ish
11/18/24 @ 4:15pm – 11/18/24 @ 5:15pm Discovery Room Winfield Public Library Youth, grades 3-7, have an opportunity to tackle the Winfield Public Library’s 2024 Reading Challenge together! November’s challenge is to read “a book written before you were born.” A book written in 1961 meets this challenge requirement for us book clubbers, even for Ms. Jo!, so we are reading The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. This special book has been enjoyed by generations for its timeless wit, wisdom, and wordplay. Now it will be enjoyed by our youth book club! We meet every Monday after school from 4:15 pm-5:15 pm and read the book aloud together each week. Youth may pop in and join us at ANY TIME! Copies of the book are available at the library, and attendance at the club meetings is not required to participate.
